This is a white Bizen Chawan made of a highly pure ceramic stone which was mined from 156 meters underground in the Sanseki district of Bizen City, Okayama.
The weathered stone powder was carefully kneaded and molded by hand to create a thick-walled bowl. The surface and foot ring of the bowl were then shaved with an iron or stainless steel made tool (used for scraping and polishing in ceramics) and fired without glaze to achieve the white Bizen finish.
When light is shone on it, this Chawan has a high level of transparency, almost like an iceberg floating on the sea, which further enhances its elegant beauty.
