Bizen Stratum01 - Syo Fujita -

Using natural, rare Bizen soil that has been formed over tens of thousands of years ago through the natural stratification of four types of Bizen clay, this breath taking Chawan was all hand builded.

This art piece was fired in a climbing kiln, and when the temperature inside the kiln reached around 1200℃, it was removed from the kiln using a long iron clamp and placed in rice husks to rapidly cool, resulting in the impressive silver-gray appearance.

A transparent glaze, which is not typically used in Bizen ware, was applied with the expectation that it would become transparent when rapidly cooled. However, the glaze has instead become white and opaque due to the quick cooling process.

The subtle variations in color that overlap one another convey the robustness of the Bizen soil, while the depth of its significance never fails to fascinate and captivate eyes.
